New announcement from BfR on PFAS – not all "forever chemicals" last forever
PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are persistent fluorinated chemicals with diverse properties. Their applications range from cosmetics to consumer goods and many everyday items (pans, outdoor jackets, etc.).
Currently, there is a discussion within Europe about a ban on this class of substances. Human body intake typically occurs through contaminated drinking water and food. A recent study by the BfR in Berlin examined how long certain PFAS compounds remain in the body after intake.
The result: short-chain PFAS are relatively quickly excreted through urine; long-chain PFAS have a significantly longer retention time in the body, lasting up to several years.
We at BAV Institute, part of the Tentamus Group, test your products and raw materials for PFAS and keep you informed about regulatory developments.
