Amendment of the guidelines for meat and meat products
In December 2024, the changes to the Guidelines for Meat and Meat Products were published.
Key changes mainly concern poultry meat and its products. For instance, descriptions of "chicken schnitzel" or "chicken goulash" were added.
Regarding "poultry steaks," it was also determined that the terms turkey steak and chicken steak are also common names.
In addition to poultry products, the definition of raw sausages was also adjusted. They may now also contain vegetable fats, provided this is specified in the designation.
The guidelines of the German Food Code describe the generally accepted commercial understanding but are not legally binding as such. However, if a food product deviates from the description according to the guidelines, this can be classified as "misleading" and is legally compliant.
