BfR and BMEL on iodine supply in Germany

Even though iodine deficiency seems like a topic of days gone by, it is still current – according to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) also highlighted this in 2021.

Iodine is an essential trace element necessary for the production of thyroid hormones in the body and thus for the regulation of a multitude of metabolic processes. Iodine must be ingested through food. Since iodine levels in the soil are low, agricultural products contain very little iodine. According to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), 32 percent of adults and 44 percent of children and adolescents in Germany have an increased risk of iodine deficiency.

Sea fish is a good natural source of iodine, as are milk and dairy products, because iodine is used as a feed additive in animal feed. In addition, iodine is mainly ingested through iodized table salt and foods made with it.
