BfR Commission for Tattooing Agents - Protocol 3rd Meeting

The BfR Commission for Tattoo Inks advises the BfR on issues related to the safety of tattoo inks and permanent make-up products (e.g., the safety of dyes used).

The 3rd meeting protocol has now been published. Among other topics, the following were discussed:

• Screening of dyes used using HPLC
• Immunotoxic effects of tattoo inks
• Microbiological quality of tattoo inks

In the last point, it was noted that most products undergo a sterilization process. This process can sometimes negatively impact the stability of the products. In any case, microbiological safety should be demonstrated (including the absence of pathogenic microorganisms).
