BfR: Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids in Honey and Pollen - In BAV Newsletter 03/2011

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has published a statement on the toxicity of pyrrolizidine alkaloids and an assessment of the health risk. The pyrrolizidine alkaloids formed in ragwort are highly toxic and can be detected in honey and pollen, depending on the location. Pollen, which is sometimes used in food supplements, can be particularly heavily contaminated.
