The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has evaluated the glycerin content in slush ice drinks for health risks. Glycerin, also known as the food additive E 422, is used in various foods, including flavored drinks.
There is no established maximum amount for the use of glycerin in food. A dose of 250 mg per kilogram of body weight was used for assessing health risks.
The analysis of 62 slush ice samples showed that even with a consumption of less than 200 milliliters in younger children, these or even higher amounts of glycerin can be ingested. In scientific studies, undesirable side effects such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness have been observed with the use of glycerin.
The BfR warns that symptoms like nausea and headaches may not always be associated with the consumption of slush ice drinks, which could lead to an underestimation of the health risk.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct tests for glycerin and other food additives, among other analyses.
