Bio baby fruit puree in the Ökotest - Bisphenol-A (BPA) "significantly increased"
In the current Öko-Test issue from September 2024, 15 organic baby foods were tested. Öko-Test criticized 6 out of 15 for having an elevated content of Bisphenol-A (BPA).
BPA is a starting material for the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. The substance is found in many packaging materials and also in the coatings of tin cans. Therefore, the transfer of BPA into food cannot be ruled out.
BPA acts similarly to hormones in the body and can contribute, for example, to diabetes mellitus, obesity, and developmental disorders (especially in children). Furthermore, the substance was classified as reproductive toxic by the EU in 2016.
The tolerable daily intake (TDI) is provided by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) at 0.2ng/kg body weight. This value was again reduced by the EFSA in 2023 from 4µg/kg by 22,000 times. For an 8kg baby, this results in a TDI of 1.6ng per day.
The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment recommends a TDI of 200ng/kg. Öko-Test adheres to the EFSA values and classifies the BPA levels in 6 of the 15 organic baby food products as "significantly elevated".
