Consumers are increasingly turning to organic foods. With increasing demand, supply also rises. What do you need to consider as a manufacturer when it comes to labeling?
In 2024, the organic retail market recorded sales growth, particularly in the second half of the year, with a total revenue of 3.26 billion euros. The number of daily purchases increased by 1.9 percent. 64 percent of the sales were in fresh organic foods, while dry products accounted for about a third. The organic retail sector solidified its role as a provider of sustainable and healthy food.
Since July 1, 2010, pre-packaged organic foods from the EU that meet the EU’s requirements for organic farming (95% of all ingredients must be organic) must be labeled with the EU organic logo. The logo features a stylized leaf on a green background.
- The logo must have a minimum height of 9 mm and a minimum width of 13.5 mm; the height/width ratio is always 1:1.5
In addition to the EU organic logo, the following information must be provided:
- The code number of the organic control body of the company that carried out the last production or processing operation (e.g., DE-ÖKO-XXX, where "DE" stands for Germany and "XXX" represents the control body number).
- The origin of the ingredients (e.g., EU agriculture, non-EU agriculture, EU/non-EU agriculture).
Unpackaged organic goods or organic food from non-EU countries can be voluntarily labeled with the EU organic logo if they meet the EU requirements. In addition to the EU organic logo, manufacturers can also label their products with the German organic seal or signs of private associations.
