BVL: Ban on Titanium Dioxide in Foods

Since August 8, 2022, foods containing the additive titanium dioxide - also known as E 171 - may no longer be placed on the market. After this date, they can remain on the market until their best-before or use-by date. This was announced by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL).

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published an assessment on 06.05.2021, concluding that the food additive titanium dioxide is not safe. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) comes to similar conclusions.

Titanium dioxide can be absorbed through the digestive tract, skin, and respiratory system and accumulate in the body. EFSA could not exclude negative effects on human genetics and potential cancer risks. Considering all available scientific studies and data, the panel concluded that titanium dioxide can no longer be considered safe as a food additive.

Subsequently, the authorization of titanium dioxide as a food additive E 171 was withdrawn EU-wide. The additive was used, for example, in sweets, coatings, and dragees.
