Classification of nettles in cheese – ALTS decision

In June 2024, the working group of experts for food hygiene and food of animal origin (ALTS) held its 93rd workshop.

One of the discussion topics of the ALTS was the classification of nettles as an ingredient in cheese and cheese products. The focus was on whether nettles are considered herbs or added foodstuffs. This distinction has legal implications for the classification of the product: If nettles are classified as herbs, the designation “cheese” is retained. If classified as an added foodstuff, the final product would be regarded as a cheese preparation.

The ALTS concluded that nettles should be classified as herbs. Consequently, the product remains cheese and not a cheese preparation.
