Consumer centers warn against CBD-containing food

Consumer centers warn against CBD-containing food

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. In recent years, food products enriched with CBD or containing CBD ingredients have increasingly appeared on the market.

The enriched foods and dietary supplements often advertise health-promoting effects of CBD. Consumer protection agencies point out that such effects are not proven. According to the Health Claims Regulation (Regulation 1924/2006), no indication of health-related claims may be found on food products.

According to the Novel Food Regulation (Regulation 2015/2283), CBD-containing foods are considered novel foods. These foods require special approval, whereby the safety of the food must be proven. As this has not been done in the case of CBD, enriched products are not marketable.

In addition, health-threatening effects of CBD cannot be ruled out at present.
