Current food alert: Undeclared allergen in raisins

In a recent food warning, consumers are advised that sulfur dioxide has been detected in raisins without being declared on the packaging. Therefore, the product is being recalled.

Sulfur dioxide is often used as an antioxidant in dried fruits. The declaration of allergens is mandatory. This applies to both pre-packaged foods and loose goods, such as in bakeries or gastronomy.

If both allergen-free and allergen-containing products are processed in an establishment, cross-contamination can occur. In this case, many providers add the note "May contain traces of ..." or "May contain ..." to protect themselves against liability claims.

People suffering from a food allergy should avoid allergens in foods. Even the smallest traces of allergens can lead to health issues. Further information regarding the labeling of allergens is listed in Annex II of the Food Information Regulation (FIR) Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct allergen tests. We provide you with fast and reliable results.
