CVUA Sigmaringen - Analysis of T-2 and HT-2 Toxins

The Chemical and Veterinary Investigational Office (CVUA) Sigmaringen has been examining food samples for the presence of T-2 and HT-2 toxins for several years. From 2016 to mid-2024, almost 3,900 samples were examined.

The focus was not only on cereal products but also on foods such as fruit juices or oils, for which no specific maximum levels have been set so far. With these investigations, CVUA Sigmaringen contributes to expanding the data basis for toxicological assessments and thereby creating the basis for setting maximum levels in the interest of preventive consumer protection.

Mycotoxins are substances produced by molds that can be toxic to humans and animals even in small amounts.

T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin have numerous negative effects on living organisms, such as damage to the hematopoietic system or the immune system, as well as the inhibition of protein biosynthesis.

The EU regulates maximum levels for certain mycotoxins in specific foods in Regulation (EU) 2023/915. As of July 1, 2024, EU-wide maximum levels for the sum of T-2 and HT-2 toxin in various cereals and cereal products will also apply for the first time.

CVUA Sigmaringen has included T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin in its analysis methods and has continuously expanded the range of matrices examined. The investigation results are forwarded to the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority). Thus, CVUA Sigmaringen continuously contributes to expanding the data basis as a foundation for toxicological assessments and ultimately for setting maximum levels in the interest of preventive consumer protection. For the year 2025, a nationwide monitoring of T-2/HT-2 toxins in apple juice is planned in Germany.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct the investigation on T-2 and HT-2 toxins. We provide you with fast and reliable results.
