Dangerous Hydrogen Cyanide in Flaxseeds: More Issues Detected

A recent test of 19 ground organic flaxseeds shows alarming results: only one product is recommended. In addition to the known danger from hydrocyanic acid, contaminations with mineral oil components and signs of fat spoilage were found.

The main problems at a glance:

Why hydrocyanic acid in flaxseeds is problematic:
Hydrocyanic acid is produced enzymatically from cyanogenic glycosides in seeds and can cause symptoms of poisoning such as headaches or shortness of breath when consumed in significant amounts. EU-wide limit values have been in effect since 2023:

Of the tested products, 14 exceeded the permissible limit for hydrocyanic acid if the instruction "Only for use in cooking and baking" was missing.

Recommendations for safe use
Consumption amounts: Adults should eat a maximum of 15 g (1 tablespoon) of ground flaxseeds per meal, children over 4 years no more than 4 g (1 teaspoon) daily. Ground flaxseeds are not suitable for children under 4 years old.
Preparation: To minimize risk, flaxseeds should be heated before consumption. This significantly reduces the hydrocyanic acid content.
Adequate fluid: Since flaxseeds swell greatly, sufficient fluid should always be consumed to prevent constipation.
Criticism of labeling and quality
Many products fail to provide clear instructions for safe use. Information about the high swelling capacity and consumption restrictions is often lacking, which could endanger consumers.

Further issues in the test
Mineral oil components: The detection of MOAH, which may contain carcinogenic components, is of particular concern.
Pesticides: The insecticide chlorpyrifos, banned in the EU, was detected in one sample.
Cadmium: The heavy metal, which accumulates in soils, can cause kidney damage.

Conclusion
Ground flaxseeds should be consumed with caution. Pay attention to clear instructions on the packaging and adhere to recommended consumption amounts. For safe use, it is advisable to heat the seeds and always consume sufficient fluid.
