Di-n-hexyl phthalate (DnHexP) – Contamination in sunscreens
Due to the detection of Mono-n-hexyl-phthalate (MnHexP) in children's urine, which is formed as a metabolite from DnHexP, sunscreens moved into the focus of public attention.
DnHexP is a plasticizer that can arise during the production of the UV filter DHHB (Diethylaminohydroxy-benzoylhexylbenzoate) and thus can be introduced as an unwanted contaminant in sunscreen products.
The Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office (CVUA) in Karlsruhe examined 103 sunscreen products for their content of DnHexP and MnHexP last year. The result showed that DnHexP was detectable exclusively in products that also contained the UV filter DHHB. MnHexP, on the other hand, was not detectable in any product.
There were also DHHB-containing sunscreen products without any DnHexP content.
