Dietarysupplements:Notificationrequired
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) points out that food supplements must be reported to the BVL before being sold. These products are considered food products and are subject to the relevant European and German regulations. However, an official evaluation or approval prior to the first marketing is not required.
Food supplements must neither have a medicinal effect nor give the impression of being a medicinal product.
Responsibility lies with the manufacturer. They must ensure that the food supplements are safe.
Food supplements are subject to the specific regulations of the Food Supplement Ordinance (NemV). Furthermore, they must also comply with the general provisions for food products. These include, among others, the Food and Feed Code (LFGB) and the Food Information Regulation (LMIV).
An online form is available on the website for reporting to the BVL. After submission, the information is forwarded to the responsible state authorities as well as to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The BVL itself does not conduct any evaluation, review, or approval of the reported food supplements.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct the analysis of food supplements. For any inquiries, our customer advisors are very happy to assist you.
