EMA publishes guideline on the quality of water for pharmaceutical purposes

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has published the "Guideline on the quality of water for pharmaceutical use" on its homepage.

This guideline provides pointers for the pharmaceutical use of different water qualities, both in the production of active ingredients and for human and veterinary medicinal products, and has been in effect since February 1, 2021.

The guideline addresses an important aspect in section 5.3: the water used for cleaning equipment, containers/closures should always be of the same quality as the water used during the manufacturing phase of medicinal products.

At BAV Institute, water analyses are part of the daily routine tests. The following tests are offered:

- Purified water (e.g., according to the European Pharmacopoeia)
- Drinking water (e.g., for aerobic bacteria count, coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, enterococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa…)
- Legionella investigations
- Mineral and table water

Our laboratory specializes in these analyses and we provide fast and reliable results. Our customer advisors are happy to answer any questions you may have.
