Epoxiconazole loses EU-wide approval

Epoxiconazole loses EU-wide approval

Epoxiconazole is a triazole that is primarily used to combat fungal diseases in cereals. The fungicide was introduced to the market by BASF in 1993 and has since been primarily used on cereals, soybeans, and rice.

The approval of pesticides containing this active ingredient expires on April 30, 2020. The main approval holder, BASF, withdrew the application for reapproval, thus preempting an active ingredient ban. France had already banned the active ingredient in mid-2019, as it is suspected of being carcinogenic and harmful to reproduction.

The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has now announced a sales deadline until October 30, 2020, and a usage deadline until October 30, 2021. Thereafter, the use of plant protection products containing epoxiconazole is prohibited throughout the EU.
