EU Commission tightens limits for cadmium and lead in food

The European Commission sets new maximum levels for cadmium and lead in a variety of foodstuffs. The new limits for cadmium will apply from August 31, 2021, and can be found in the  new Regulation (EU) 2021/1323. The new limits for lead will apply from August 30, 2021, according to Regulation (EU) 2021/1317.

Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that occurs in the environment both naturally and through agricultural and industrial activities. It can be found mainly in foods such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, and oilseeds. Lead is a naturally occurring contaminant in the environment. The limit value has been tightened, among other things, in foods for infants and young children, as well as for wild mushrooms, spices, and salt.

In our Tentamus laboratories we regularly conduct tests for cadmium and lead.
