EU Drafts on Cloning Products and Novel Food - In BAV Newsletter 01/2014
The European Commission has adopted draft guidelines on cloning and novel foods.
According to this, both the cloning of farm animals and the marketing of live cloned animals and clone embryos are to be prohibited as long as concerns regarding animal welfare persist. The ban is also to apply to the marketing of food from cloned animals, such as meat or milk. However, the drafts do not affect the descendants of cloned animals and their products.
In addition, the Commission intends to simplify the approval process for novel foods. According to the Commission, the current process makes it difficult for new and innovative foods to access the EU market.
