EU Rapid Alert System: Annual Report 2016

According to the annual report of the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), there were nearly 3,000 notifications in 2016 – 28% as alert notifications and about 40% as information about rejections at border controls.

Germany, with nearly 1,000 notifications, was most frequently represented after Italy. In the ranking of alerts, pesticide residues, aflatoxins, and heavy metal contaminations were highest – with microbiological contaminations by Salmonella and Escherichia coli being numerically secondary. However, the highlighted food safety events in 2016 were microbiological outbreaks caused by Listeria in cheese, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) in raw sausage, and Salmonella in eggs.
