Frozen peas – Analysis for pesticides, cadmium, lead and chlorate
In the Öko-Test issue from January 2022, a recent test analyzed 21 products of frozen peas. Among them were 8 organic products and 13 conventional products. The test examined the following parameters:
· Pesticide residue analysis
No synthetic pesticides were detected in the organic products. The conventional products showed no or only very small amounts of pesticides (pyrimethanil and azoxystrobin), which were below the legal maximum limit.
· Heavy metals: lead and cadmium
Small amounts of lead were detected in more than half of the tested products and are well below the legal limit. Cadmium was not detected in any of the frozen peas.
· Residue analysis of chlorate
Chlorate was found in 5 frozen peas. The compound can enter food as a residue from disinfectants and especially via chlorinated tap and process water. However, the levels were well below the legal limit and also unproblematic according to the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) evaluation of chlorate.
