Hexyl Salicylate - Scientific Assessment for Safe Use in Cosmetics

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has issued a scientific opinion on Hexyl Salicylate (SCCS/1658/23). This ingredient, with the INCI name "hexyl 2-hydroxybenzoate" (CAS/EC No. 6259-76-3/228-408-6), is used in various consumer products like cosmetics, household cleaners, detergents, and air care products due to its sweet, floral, and fruity aroma.

The SCCS has evaluated the available data and considered the potential endocrine properties. Hexyl Salicylate can be considered safe when the maximum concentrations of this opinion are used:

·         Hydroalcoholic based fragrances (non-spray): 2%

·         Rinse-off skin: maximum 0.5%

·         Leave on skin: 0.3%

·         Face Make-up: 0.3%

·         Oral care products: 0.001%
