Laves examines children's rice cakes for lead, cadmium, and arsenic
In the Food and Veterinary Institute Oldenburg of the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES), a total of nine samples of children's rice cakes were examined for the toxic elements lead, cadmium, and arsenic in 2020.
Both the lead and cadmium contents were unobtrusive. However, the arsenic levels confirmed the known arsenic issue in rice products. High levels of total arsenic up to 0.87 mg/kg were determined. The examination of inorganic arsenic showed levels up to 0.09 mg/kg. On average, the levels in "children's rice cakes" used about 75 percent of the permissible maximum level for the raw material rice.
Inorganic arsenic is classified as carcinogenic. Organic arsenic compounds are considered less toxic than inorganic arsenic, but some organic arsenic compounds have also been classified as potentially carcinogenic.
