Long-running Ethylene Oxide – Regulation (EU) No. 2019/1793 mandates increased control of certain foodstuffs
Ethylene oxide, used as a fumigant or pesticide, is still a commonly detected residue in many foods. This is easy to verify on the website www.lebensmittelwarnung.de, where recalls and their reasons are published. Hardly a week passes without a recall posted there due to ethylene oxide.
The regularly updated Regulation (EU) No. 2019/1793, among other things, mandates increased testing of numerous foods (e.g. instant noodles, food supplements containing plant substances) and their ingredients (e.g. locust bean gum, spices like cinnamon and cloves) for ethylene oxide residues.
The EU is responding to the numerous exceedances of the maximum residue level for ethylene oxide in Regulation (EC) No. 396/2005, which can also be found in the EU Pesticides Database.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly perform tests for ethylene oxide and its degradation product 2-chloroethanol. We deliver fast and reliable results. If you have any questions, our customer support is happy to assist you.
