Maximum levels for vitamins and minerals

The BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) has reviewed its proposed maximum levels for vitamins and minerals from 2004 and revised them based on new scientific findings.

The maximum levels were derived considering the following three essential parameters:

To ensure that products containing nutrients in these amounts do not pose health risks not only for adults but also for adolescents according to the current state of knowledge, the age group of 15 to 17-year-olds was chosen as the reference group for deriving maximum levels.
According to the BfR, sufficient amounts of micronutrients are generally absorbed through traditional diets in Germany, with few exceptions, making dietary supplements generally unnecessary from a nutritional point of view.

The BfR's maximum level proposals serve as a basis for establishing legal regulations in Germany and thus as a decision-making aid for risk management in adopting risk-reducing measures.
