New EU Organic Regulation Adopted
As of July 1, 2021, new regulations on organic farming and organic food production and labeling apply in the EU:
- Simplification of production rules by eliminating exemptions
- Expansion of the control system with stricter precautionary measures and robust risk-based controls along the entire supply chain
- Compliance with uniform rules regarding producers in third countries and the EU
- The scope of organic farming regulations will be extended to a broader list of products (for example, salt, cork, beeswax, mate, vine leaves, palm hearts) and additional production regulations (for example, deer, rabbits, and poultry)
- Facilitation of certification for small farmers through new group certification system
- To potentially reduce a risk-laden contamination by pesticides, the introduction of a uniform approach is necessary
- Exceptions for production in isolated beds in greenhouses will be gradually phased out.
