New REACH regulation on the restriction of microplastics
The European Commission has published the Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 amending Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation. The amendments concern synthetic polymer microparticles, formerly known as microplastics, in various products. These include cleaning agents, cosmetics, and more. The regulation includes restrictions, labeling, and information obligations.
The use of microplastics will end, among others, for the following products:
- rinse-off/exfoliating microbeads with the function of peeling and cleaning as of October 17, 2023
- "rinse-off" products as of October 17, 2027
- encapsulation of fragrances and in "leave-on" products (except lip care products, nail products, and make-up) as of October 17, 2029
- lip care products, nail products, and make-up as of October 17, 2035. Already as of 2031 labeling requirement: "This product contains microplastics."
