New Regulation (EU) 2024/2895 on Listeria monocytogenes – What changes for food businesses?
The Regulation (EU) 2024/2895 of the Commission of 20 November 2024 amends Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 concerning the food safety criterion for Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat foods.
This amendment comes into force on July 1, 2026, and will play an important role for many manufacturers, especially those of perishable foods that promote the growth of Listeria monocytogenes. Therefore, it is important for businesses to address this in a timely manner.
The amendment affects Category 1.2 from Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005, which can promote the growth of Listeria monocytogenes. The other categories 1.1 and 1.3, as well as Category 1.2, which do not promote the growth of Listeria monocytogenes, are not affected by the changes of the new regulation. For these ready-to-eat foods, everything remains as before.
Previously, for ready-to-eat foods that can promote growth, the limit "not detectable in 25 g" applied only at the manufacturing level. At the trade level, the limit of 100 CFU/g was often applied in practice. With the new regulation, the limit for foods that can promote growth is "not detectable in 25 g".
This significantly increases the hygienic requirements and the risk of recalls for the affected food businesses.
