Reclassification Hexamethylindanopyran (Galaxolide) Cosmetics

Reclassification Hexamethylindanopyran (Galaxolide) Cosmetics

In December 2024, the relevant French authority submitted a new CLH dossier concerning the harmonized classification and labeling of Galaxolide.

Currently, Galaxolide is regulated for use in cosmetics according to the EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, Annex III (entry number 336). The substance must be declared above amounts of 10ppm (leave-on products) or 100ppm (rinse-off products), and there is no maximum threshold.

With the anticipated reclassification (potentially as reproductive toxicant category 1B), a ban is likely. Generally, at least 40 months elapse before such a reclassification is finalized.

Our institute examines Galaxolide and other substances within our fragrance spectrum, also per the new Regulation (EU) 1223/1545.
