New EFSA risk assessment of undesirable and partly still problematic mineral oil residues (MOSH/MOAH) in food

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published an updated risk assessment on mineral oil residues in foods. According to current knowledge, there are no health concerns regarding the intake of saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH) with food. However, EFSA still sees a high intake of aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH), especially for infants and young children. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) emphasizes that contamination of food with mineral oil components is generally undesirable and better processes in agricultural production, transportation, storage, and processing of food can help reduce the entry of mineral oil components. According to EFSA, the daily intake of mineral oil components in all population groups has roughly halved since 2012.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly perform MOSH/MOAH testing, providing you with fast and reliable results. If you have any questions, please contact your customer advisor.
