New ALS Resolution on "Free From" Labeling of Allergens

New ALS Resolution on "Free From" Labeling of Allergens

The Working Group of Food Chemical Experts (ALS) has adopted a new resolution for the labeling "free from" allergens. Accordingly, foods may only be labeled as "free from (allergen x)" if the allergen in question is actually undetectable. However, if the allergen is detectable, such labeling is considered misleading according to Article 7, paragraph 1 of the Food Information to Consumers Regulation (FICR).

The ALS recommends using indications such as "without added/added/used (allergen x)" only if the allergen has not been used as an ingredient and no technologically unavoidable traces of the allergen are present in the product. Otherwise, such statements could also be considered misleading.

This resolution aims to enhance trust in food labeling and improve transparency for consumers.
