Newly created guidelines for the use and labeling of flavors in organic products

The use of flavors in food has been newly regulated in the EU Organic Regulation (EU) No. 2018/848, in effect since January 1, 2021.

What has changed? What do manufacturers of organic foods need to pay attention to?

Answers are provided in the new “Guide on the Use of Conventional Flavors in Organic Foods according to Regulation (EU) No. 2018/848” by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture Germany e.V. (FiBL). The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) based on a decision of the German Bundestag.

On this topic, the European Flavour Association (EFFA) has also published a guide “EFFA Interpretation on the New Organic Regulation in relation to Flavourings” as of February 2021. In addition, the EFFA has created a Q&A catalog “EFFA Q&A on the new Organic Regulation” which refers to the guide.
