Novel Food: Migratory Locust Approved as Edible Insect
After the yellow mealworm was approved as a novel food, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has now issued an opinion on the safety of consuming the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria).
One criterion is possible contamination with pollutants. However, contamination with pollutants is highly dependent on the feed. When breeding the migratory locust in compliance with all legal requirements, it is safe for health. Thus, due to its high protein content, the locust can be used as a protein source.
The migratory locust can be used as a snack or food ingredient by being ground (whole), frozen (without legs and wings), or dried (without legs and wings).
Just like with the yellow mealworm, consumption may potentially lead to allergic reactions in individuals with shellfish allergies.
