Öko-Test examines body lotions with urea (Urea)
Total of 20 body lotions have been closely examined by the magazine Öko-Test in the current December issue. These were cosmetic products where urea was promoted. This substance is used for hydration and scaling and also acts weakly antimicrobial. Since urea is taboo in natural cosmetics, this product group was not tested.
The result: except for 4 products, all receive the grade very good or good. Four additional products received at most the grade unsatisfactory.
As criteria for potential devaluation, the following are mentioned:
- Paraffins and silicones
- Halogenated organic compounds (AOX)
- Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOAH)
- PEGs and PEG derivatives
- Recyclate content (PCR) in the packaging material
Regarding the minimum content of urea in cosmetic products, a data sheet from the AG Kosmetik of the GDCh is available. Although it is not legally binding, it provides information on possible usage concentrations. You can download this data sheet for free at the following link.
The BAV Institute and its Tentamus laboratory partners conduct the corresponding tests for you, check the content of active substances used, and thus ensure the quality of your cosmetic products.
