Pesticides and Perchlorate in Christmas Spices

The Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Office (CVUA) Stuttgart examined a total of 40 different Christmas spices from 2022 to 2024, including 7 samples from organic farming, for pesticide residues and perchlorate.

Only 4 out of 33 samples from conventional farming showed no residues. The majority of the products examined also contained more than one active ingredient. In two samples, exceedances of the maximum residue levels of Regulation (EU) No. 396/2005 were found. Perchlorate could be detected in 15 out of 16 conventional cinnamon samples. However, the contents were below the maximum level regulated in Regulation (EU) No. 2023/915. All 7 organic spice samples examined were unobjectionable regarding their residue levels.
