Any detection of microorganisms (even in small numbers) in a cosmetic end product requires special attention from the distributor. Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 requires stable and safe products. Microbiological product safety is included in this.
DIN EN ISO 17516 specifies limit values regarding the content of microorganisms in a product. It also describes, using a decision tree, how to deal with microbiologically suspicious products.
In the context of risk assessment for a product, germ identification should be carried out for any positive finding. This serves, among other things, to identify the possible source of entry.
Even small amounts of microorganisms can lead to high contamination levels very quickly under ideal conditions.
