Preservative efficacy tests for cosmetics
The challenge test is supposed to confirm that the cosmetic product prevents microbial growth under normal use conditions, ensuring it is microbiologically stable. However, it is important to note that challenge tests are solely models and do not guarantee 100% safety.
The performance of a challenge test is required by the EU Cosmetics Regulation as part of the safety assessment (see Annex 1, Point 3 of the regulation).
Exempted from the requirement to carry out a challenge test are products that meet one or more of the following conditions (see also DIN EN ISO 29621):
- pH < 3.0
- pH > 10.0
- Alcohol content > 20%
- Filling temperature > 65.0°C
- Water activity (aw) < 0.75
- Solvent-based products
- Oxidizing products
- Aluminum chlorohydrate > 25%
Other low-risk products can be identified through an individual risk assessment.
In our laboratory, we conduct these tests regularly. We provide fast and reliable results.
