Propolis in Cosmetics – Contact Allergies on the Rise
Propolis is used in various cosmetic products. For example in ointments, creams, lipsticks or mouthwash. Its use is not prohibited according to the Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.
Propolis (INCI: with the word component PROPOLIS), also known as bee resin, is produced by honeybees from tree resin, pollen, and secretion. The bees themselves use this substance as a “glue”.
The European Society of Contact Dermatitis showed that 3.5% of more than 22,500 participants showed skin reactions due to propolis.
