Regulation No. 1881/2006: Revision of the maximum levels for cadmium under discussion

Regulation No. 1881/2006: Revision of the maximum levels for cadmium under discussion

The European Commission is currently working on a revision of the maximum levels of cadmium in foodstuffs in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 1881/2006 (Maximum Levels of Contaminants Regulation).

Based on monitoring data from the Member States, the European Commission has proposed a number of changes to maximum levels or differentiations of specific types of goods for certain food categories. Below is an overview:

The background to the revision is a Commission recommendation (2014/193/EU), which called on Member States to inform the Commission of risk mitigation measures taken to minimise cadmium entry into cereals, potatoes and vegetables. Germany stated that in addition to arable and crop measures, limiting cadmium inputs through fertilizers can make an important contribution to minimizing the entry. As risk mitigation measures, Germany also mentioned national limits for the cadmium content in fertilizers and labeling obligations starting from a certain cadmium content in fertilizers. We will keep you informed about further developments.
