Risks of Pluralibacter gergoviae in Cosmetics – SOFW Technical Article

In the current issue of the SOFW Journal (January/February 2021), a specialist article on the risks of Pluralibacter gergoviae in cosmetics has been published. The article was published with the cooperation of Ms. Joelle Nussbaum from the BAV Institute. Ms. Nussbaum leads the "Microbiology and Operational Hygiene" working group of the DGK (German Society for Cosmetics).

The microorganism Pluralibacter gergoviae (formerly known as Enterobacter gergoviae) has long been known as a contaminant in cosmetic products. A statement from the BfR from September 2020 demands that this bacterium must not be present in cosmetic products. The article clearly explains the guidelines of this statement and outlines ways to implement these requirements in practice.

A key point is a comprehensive examination of the products according to the specifications of ISO 17516, as well as an appropriate risk assessment when this bacterium is present. Of course, other microorganisms such as other Enterobacter species or pseudomonads also play an equally important role.

The BAV Institute tests your products for the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae and provides consulting services on all microbiological issues.
