Testing of the stability of cosmetic products

Testing of the stability of cosmetic products

An adequate stability of cosmetics is a central component of product safety according to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009. This includes microbiological stability, verified by a preservation challenge test (PCT), usually conducted according to ISO 11930.

In addition, chemical-physical stability as well as the stability of the packaging material play an important role. These two aspects are checked through stability tests and storage at different temperatures.

Besides sensory properties, parameters such as pH value, density, viscosity, lipid parameters, etc., play an important role. It is checked to what extent changes in these parameters occur over a period of e.g. 3 months at 40°C. A comparison against specification values is also advisable.

For emulsions, emulsion stability should also be checked using a shaking test (e.g. daily alternation between 4°C and 40°C).

BAV Institute performs all the above tests for you. In close cooperation with your safety assessor, you can demonstrate the safety and stability of your products.
