Stiftung Warentest tests sunscreens
The good news: almost all tested products (17 out of 19) performed very well or well in testing by Stiftung Warentest (Issue July 2019). Only two products were rated inadequate, the reason for this was the failure to comply with the stated sun protection factor (SPF).
Furthermore, not a single product was microbiologically conspicuous, neither in the determination of the germ status nor in the test for sufficient preservation (preservative load test). The following were rated down, among others:
- The fragrance Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial)
- The UV filter Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate
- Mineral oil components (MOSH/MOAH)
Always make sure to use products with a correspondingly high protection factor (if possible at least SPF 30, for very sensitive people or small children SPF 50) and especially when swimming, reapply the product. Even if water resistance is advertised, this is never to be understood as 100% security.
The BAV Institute, in conjunction with the laboratories of the international Tentamus Group, is happy to assist you with all analytical questions regarding cosmetic products.
