Vegan cheese tested: How good are the alternatives from Edeka, Rewe & Co.?

A recent test by ÖkoTest (January 2025 issue) examined the quality of twelve vegan sliced cheese varieties. In addition to taste, smell, appearance, and consistency, the focus was particularly on the ingredients. The result shows: There is still considerable need for improvement, especially with regard to potentially harmful residues and nutritional content.

Contaminant analyses for increased safety
In lab tests, concerning residues such as mineral oil hydrocarbons were detected in the products. 

Mineral oil components: Avoidable risks
In four of the tested cheese alternatives, laboratories found aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH), which in some cases exceeded the maximum levels recommended by the EU. Since MOAH can contain carcinogenic compounds, they should not be detectable in food. Additionally, saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOSH analogs) were found, which can accumulate in the body and pose health risks. These residues often enter food through lubricants in production – a problem that is avoidable.

Excessive salt content
The salt content was also an issue in many of the tested products. Almost all varieties exceeded the Finnish threshold of 1.4 percent, beyond which a warning label would be mandatory. Comparison with conventional cheese
From a nutritional standpoint, vegan cheese varieties also perform worse: They contain less protein and calcium than traditional cheese and are mainly composed of coconut oil, water, and starch. To mimic the taste of cheese, flavors are often used.
