Vitamin D supplements in test
In the current Ökotest issue from January 2025, the test results of 23 vitamin D3 supplements are discussed, weighing the pros and cons of vitamin D supplementation.
Only two of the tested products received the highest rating, while many supplements were negatively evaluated due to excessive dosages or questionable ingredients.
Ingredients such as carrageenan, phosphates, and talc were particularly criticized, as they can potentially be harmful to health.
Additionally, 15 supplements contain a recommended daily dose that exceeds the 20 micrograms recommended by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).
Vitamin D is primarily produced through UV-B radiation in the skin, and for many healthy individuals, supplementation is unnecessary. Risk groups such as older people, people with dark skin, or chronic illnesses could benefit.
Ökotest also criticizes the insufficient information on packaging that should inform about self-production of vitamin D or specific target groups.
Conclusion: The suitability of vitamin D supplements strongly depends on dosage and individual needs – the motto is: "The dose makes the poison."
