BVL Zoonosis Monitoring 2021 – presumptive Bacillus cereus in pre-packaged salad
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has published the report on zoonosis monitoring 2021. Here, increased levels of presumptive Bacillus cereus were detected in ready-to-eat salads in pre-packaged form.
In total, 20.5% of the tested samples of lamb's lettuce, arugula, or picking salad in pre-packaged form had germ counts above 1000 CFU/g. Due to a high genetic similarity, the detected strains are presumably attributable to the use of Bacillus thuringiensis strains as bio-insecticides.
Some presumptive Bacillus cereus are capable of producing toxins that can lead to poisoning with vomiting and/or diarrhea in particularly sensitive consumer groups. Further information can also be found on the BfR website (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment).
