In 2015/16, a caffeinated soft drink made from an infusion of coffee cherry pulp was briefly available on the food market. Since the fruit flesh (= pulp) of the coffee cherry was classified as a so-called Novel Food in the EU, the sale of the drink was quickly banned.

Since January 2022, coffee cherry pulp has now been officially approved as a traditional food from non-EU countries according to the Novel Food Regulation. Coffee cherry pulp, also known as Cascara, can be sold both as a ready-made infusion and in dried form. In terms of taste, Cascara is more reminiscent of a fruit tea than a coffee beverage and can vary from sweet to fruity-tart depending on the coffee variety.
