Titanium dioxide in cosmetics - Safe use according to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009
Titanium dioxide is currently used in many cosmetics such as make-up, lipsticks, toothpastes, and sunscreens. The maximum amount is regulated by the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) 1223/2009.
In the food sector, titanium dioxide will be banned effective August 2022. Questions regarding its safe use in cosmetics have been newly raised.
In a recent article, Dr. Burfeindt from the Industrial Association for Personal Care and Detergents (IKW) explains recent developments in this area. Currently, no further regulations or bans are foreseeable in the field of cosmetics. If re-regulation becomes necessary, it is most likely in the area of cosmetics that can potentially be ingested (toothpastes, lip care).
Cosmetics Europe, the European cosmetics industry association, is also keeping an eye on this issue.
The BAV Institute will keep you fully informed as soon as new regulations come into effect. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your BAV customer advisor at any time.
